Military Time Calculator: Hours Between Two Times

How long between two military times, across midnight too, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours for a timecard.

Type when something starts and when it ends, in military time or standard time. The calculator shows how long that is, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. If the end is earlier than the start, it counts on into the next day, as for a night shift.

How to work it out yourself

  1. Turn both times into minutes after midnight: hours × 60 + minutes. 2200 is 22 × 60 = 1320 minutes; 0630 is 6 × 60 + 30 = 390 minutes.
  2. Subtract the start from the end. If the result is below zero, the time ran past midnight: add 1440, the minutes in a day. 390 − 1320 = −930, and −930 + 1440 = 510 minutes.
  3. Turn the minutes back into hours and minutes: 510 minutes is 8 hours and 30 minutes.

Decimal hours

Timecards and payroll often count hours as a decimal: the hours, then the minutes divided by 60. 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours. Common minutes as decimals:

The calculator gives decimal hours to two places, without rounding to a quarter or a tenth of an hour. Employers round time in different ways, so use the rule your employer gives.

Across midnight

An end time earlier than the start time is read as the next day: 2200 to 0630 is 8 hours 30 minutes. To count a whole day, end at 2400: 0000 to 2400 is 24 hours. The calculator does not count spans longer than a day.
